Rules

General Rules

These are a set of firm guidelines to ensure that people's experience here is an enjoyable one; rather than being a shitstorm of hateful arseholes.

  1. Don't Be A Rules-Lawyer
If you want to dance a merry jig on the line of "Well it isn't explicitly banned in the rules" when an admin tells you to stop doing something, out you shall go. We all know that one prick who likes to play the game of "I'm not touching you", seeking retaliation so they can tell the teacher that you hit them.
    Don't be that prick.
  2. Bigotry is a Hard No
Don't be slinging slurs or bigoted language (e.g. 'retard' or 'trap', or using 'gay' in a derogatory manner), don't be making rape "jokes", don't be treating ethnic cleansing or genocide as a fucking joke either. And no, misspelling it slightly doesn't make it acceptable either. If it would get you punched in the jaw saying it to someone's face, maybe really reconsider saying it.
Do not purposefully misuse others' pronouns - if you make a mistake, acknowledge that you've slipped up, move on and do better next time.
(If you think this policy is preventing you from being funny, then maybe you weren't funny to begin with.)
If an admin tells you to stop/saying something because it violates this policy, it is not up for debate. Stop, or go away. See Rule 1.
    1. The Devil Does Not Need Pro-Bono Advocates
We've all heard "it's just jokes, bro" before; we've all seen chucklefucks "just playing devil's advocate". All it does, is provide irony-flavoured cover for shit to creep in.
If you don't kick the nazi out of the bar, it becomes permitted and commonplace, and he'll invite his buddies. Even if they're not calling for the death of anyone, it's going to drive other people out of the bar because they aren't comfortable in a place that lets scum hang about. And before you know it, you're running the nazi bar. And we don't want that.
  3. Do not name your character/yourself after controversial figures
If you need a rule of thumb as for what counts as controversial: avoid naming your character after murderers, abusers, religious figures, or a name that's made it on the news. If you want to call yourself 'Albert Einstein', go ahead; but 'OJ Simpson' is right out.
If an admin tells you to change your character name because it violates this rule, it is not up for debate. Change it or leave. See Rule 1.
  4. No Explicit Content
Avatars, images, or other messages that can be deemed pornographic, sexually charged, emotionally harmful, excessively shocking or generally distasteful are not particularly welcome here. There are plenty of other places you can throw your pornographic images, the internet is full of them; but here is not an appropriate place for them.
  5. Do Not Impersonate Admins
It really shouldn't need to be said, should it? Quietly reminding people of the rules is fine, but don't take it upon yourself to enforce them. Don't threaten to get people banned, etc. Nobody likes a mall-cop.

Game Rules

  1. The General Rules Apply, Too
    'Nuff said.
  2. Don't Grief
We're all here to have fun; don't piss in people's cheerios just because it makes you happy, without considering what sort of negative -- or round-ending -- impact you're going to have on other people. Harming people (including, but not limited to: Killing, dismembering, stripping, crippling, force-feeding, force-borging, setting-up death-traps, wrecking portions of the station, uploading murder laws to the AI, deliberately blowing shit up in inappropriate spaces) with little to no justification runs up against this rule.
Legitimate conflict will occur -- it's the whole point of the game, after all -- and it's all very contextual; but conflicts should escalate in a reasonable fashion. If you're throwing people out into space because they're taking too long at the soda machine, you're just griefing.
Antags, of course, are expected to cause trouble; it's why they're there.
    1. Do Not Self-Antag
Don't suddenly decide you're an Operative, because you've gotten bored, or the clown has slapped you with a pie one too many times. If you're an antag, the game will tell you. Anything else is just griefing. Even if it is only the clown you're hurling out of an airlock.
    2. There is a difference between being a jerk, and griefing.
Being a jerk is almost expected in ss13, and things like minor theft, slipping, and so on are almost necessary. Stuff that doesn't severely impact someone else's ability to enjoy the game, or can otherwise be dealt with with in-game resources like the Sec officers (Because it gives them something to do!)
The line between 'jerk' and 'griefer' is a fuzzy one, and it depends on the admin.
      * If you steal someone's ID, and it's a relatively calm round where the HoP hasn't run away into space yet, that's a minor deal, but they can always go get another one.
      * If all hell has broken loose, the station is breaking in half, and you steal someone's ID and leave them in a room that they can't get out of to flee to escape, and you're not an antag; that's really a jerk move, but it might still be roleplay appropriate!
It really is a fuzzy line, but try to think whether or not it'd be out of character for a really rude person, before calling grief.
  3. Don't Carry Grudges Between Rounds
If someone was a jerk to you in one round, and you didn't quite manage to get back at them before the round ends; let it go. The next round is a new shift, a new day.
  4. Try to avoid IC in OOC
Please don't use the OOC channel to spoil in-character events, such as the identity of an antagonist. OOC gets blasted to everyone, whether or not they'd be able to hear you in-character; and you probably wouldn't like it so much if you were trying to be sneaky...

Things to Bear In Mind...

  1. Have you been made an antagonist?
Treat your newfound powers role as an interesting creative challenge, rather than an excuse to just go on a silent rampage and murder everyone. You can treat your objectives as suggestions as to what you should attempt to achieve, but you are also entirely permitted to ignore them if you have something more entertaining and/or enjoyable in mind. You aren't required to act in a nefarious or evil way, but a silent rampage is just boring. Think, how can you make the round more interesting?
    1. Conversely, be kind to the bad guys
Antagonists are the primary driving force in a round, unless it's an extended slog, so some good-will should be extended to them, rather than just quietly toolboxing them to death on sight. Again, how can you make the round have a more interesting narrative?
